Kljaković Gašpić second in Garda

After the Sailing World Cup series format has been refreshed and is sailed on all parts of the world (consequently there are less races in Europe), the Eurosaf Champions Sailing Cup has much greater importance than before. The first regatta in the series concluded on Sunday in usually windy lake Garda, home of windsurfers, kiters, bikers and, of course, sailors.

Similar to World Cup Series, new racing has been implemented. Shorter races, more races, 25 boats in gold group and 6 boats in final race (better known as medal race), to name just the biggest innovations.

In a 4 days series average 9 races has been sailed plus final race on Sunday. Weather conditions weren’t the best, as Garda wind machine wasn’t working perfectly, especially on Friday, when it has been raining all day long. Still it was a great event and majority of top sailors, especially in Laser class, joined the racing. Though there hasn’t been many sandiliners competing, as had a well deserved break after two World Cups.

In the finn class, where we were represented by some of our sandiliners, Ivan Kljaković Gašpić from Croatia finished second overall and Deniss Karpak from Estonia on 4th place. Given the fact that there were many top sailors sailing, this is a great success for our guys.

New scoring system and sandiline at Sailing World Cup in Hyeres
The last european sailing world cup regatta has finished yesterday with medal races in extremely light winds. This year was, compared to last year and years before, much friendlier to lighter sailors, as the really strong wind, although forecasted, hasn’t shown.
There was also a redesigned scoring system practiced, that again got a very negative feedback.
Sandiline gear again did a really good job, as many top sailors have worn our products. Unfortunately our ambassadors didn’t win a medal this time.
The best performance showed Mathilde de Kerengat (FRA). She finished in the unlucky 4th place after some excellent race performances. Here is what she has told us: “I am happy with my result, I unfortunately didn’t make it to the podium but the points were not too close with the 3 girls in front of me, so I think 4th is my correct place. I am particularly pleased to have won 2 races and the 2nd medal race during the event. It shows me I can beat the best girls and it makes me more confident for the future. It was the first time I won races during a world cup event and it feels good! Now I will have some days of resting/studying and I will be back on the water for the Eurosaf in Medemblik at the end of May.” It looks like it is just the matter of time, when her rivals will have to admit that she is better than them ...
In the Finn class Vasilij Žbogar (SLO) had a really good regatta start after being seriously sick just before the start of the regatta and won qualifications series by a huge gap. Unfortunately this didn’t mean much in the new scoring system and because of one bad day, he finished the regatta in the 8th place. On the other hand Jonathan Lobert (FRA) didn’t start really well and have brought 13 points from qualifications to the finals. In the finals he showed much better performance and in the end ended in the 6th place.
Our team  Guilbaud - Guillarm in the 470 class again entered the medal races and showed that they are currently one of the best in the fleet. Unfortunately they didn’t make it to get a medal this time, yet we are sure this is going to happen shortly.
Next World Cup regatta will be held in Qingdao in the middle of October. But before, some really nice and competitive regattas will be sailed in Europe as a part of Eurosaf european cup.
